Summary
South Africa began having problems as early as 1900 with the second Boer War. During this war the British invent concentration camps for African women and children. To help recover from the damages of war South Africa was invited to join the commonwealth countries and the Afrikaans were given control. The ANC was created to represent 80% of the population. In 1950 the Group Areas Act legally enabled apartheid to take place followed by the Separate Amenities Act in 1953. Government started learning from North America in towns and cities creating reserve and residential school like areas. In 1960 the Sharpsville massacre had taken place, which started out as a peaceful protest that ended up killing almost 70. The result of the massacre is a world wide boycot of the country. Several years later a second uprising had taken place in Soweto killing around 600. After Mandela is released from prison he turned from violence to a more political fight and came out on top. Became President and is the end to apartheid.
