Describe the challenges Lenin faced immediately after the Russia Civil War and the power struggle that existed after Lenin's death. In your opinion, did Stalin modernize Russia?"
During the Russian civil war there were 2 opposing sides; the Reds and the Whites. Lenin, the leader of the Reds, had large amounts of support from the poor and had the superior military strategist, Trotsky. Also with only the half hearted support from other countries around the world the Reds had victory. After winning the civil war, Lenin had brought in war communism to try and recover from both WW1 and the Civil War. This meant that industries were nationalized, labour was compulsory, and private trade was suppressed. After 3 years of war communism and no recovery, Lenin introduced NEP. This new economic policy allowed some private trading and allowed the purchase of small factories for private ownership. Finally some parts of the industry started to recover. After a failed assassination attempt on Lenin, he dies three years later due to his injuries. This left power up for grabs between Stalin, head of propaganda, and Trotsky, head of military. With Stalin supporting consumer goods, and especially being the head of propaganda helped Stalin take control. With his first opportunity he expels Trotsky from the Soviet Union and sends people to hunt him down and eventually kill him in Mexico.
