During WW2 there were many groundbreaking (literally) technological advancements. Other then communication advancements, all were weaponized. The most relevant upgrades were V1 and V2 Rockets (Buzz bombs), long range aircraft, jet aircraft, helicopters, and nuclear bombs. Though these all had major pieces in the war, the nuclear bomb was the most important advancement in arguably the 20th century. When the US had made the decision to drop the nuclear bombs on Japan they had taken many things into consideration. One of the most important factors was the amount of lives they would have had to sacrifice to raid Japan in the common way. By dropping the bombs the US had saved millions of their own people while achieving their goal of making Japan surrender. Surprisingly, the nuclear weapon has possibly been the best peace keeper of the 20th and 21st centuries. By showing the raw power and destruction of a nuclear bomb, it has prevented a third world war. Everyone knows that it will eventually lead to a nuclear war and the world would not be able to survive if it came to that.
The TSN turning point in games is were all of the momentum of one team shifts to another, usually after a big play. WW2 had it's own turning point in Russia during the battle of Stalingrad. Germany had it's way with western Europe but made a mistake by breaking the Non-Aggression Pact they had with Russia. Germany had been pushing Russian troops back for several months until Russia took its final stand in Stalingrad. Stalingrad being the furthest east German troops would get during WW2. After Germany had taken the inner-city Russia used Germany's own strategy, the pincer movement, and completely surrounded the German soldiers. Even after German soldiers were commanded to fight to the death, in just 3 days around 300 000 German soldiers surrendered to Russia. This was the start of the push back from Russia. With the help of winter, Russia successfully pushed Germany completely out of its country giving Germany nowhere else to expand. This showed that Germany could be fought and pushed back giving momentum to the Allies.
Winston Churchill's quote, "Wars are not won on evacuations" is a very true statement. Let us compare war to a wrestling match. To win a wrestling match you must pin your opponent. How are you able to pin your opponent if you are always backing away and evading his moves? To celebrate a complete evacuation of a full army as the opponent stayed and did nothing I believe was foolish. Nothing was gained to be celebrated, only a loss of territory. Germany had done everything right with their advancements of troops throughout all of the countries they had overtaken. Never once evacuating until the loss of the war. Since the sleeping giant had awaken near the end of WW2 they didn't evacuate to win the war. If I were to add to this quote I would say that wars are only lost upon evacuation.
Throughout this movie there was moving images and quotes which precisely depicted some of the events that took place during WW2. The movie showed the true blood and grit it took to survive in the war. Moreover the short and long term emotional and spiritual changes that were made to cope with what was happening to, and around these soldiers. To start the movie it shows infamous D-day, the ocean was made red from the blood of dead allied soldiers. It follows a group of soldiers who successfully over take a german outpost. They are then assigned to recover Private Ryan from an unknown location so he can go home to his mother. In the first leg of their journey Captain Miller says one of the most thought provoking quote of the movie, "Sometimes I wonder if I've changed so much, my wife is even gonna recognize me whenever it is I get back to her, and how I'll ever be able to tell about days like today. Aw, Ryan. I don't know anything about Ryan, I don't care. The man means nothing to me; he's just a name. But if, you know, if going to Ramelle, and finding him so he can go home, if that earns me the right to get back to my wife, well then, then that's my mission." This quote reflects on how the war truly changes people. Captain Miller himself was just a school teacher before the war had started. It shows what some soldiers were truly fighting for and what they would do for loved ones.
